Global CMT Search

This searches the copy of the Global Centroid Moment Tensor (CMT) database held locally but drawn from GCMT sources. (This catalog used to be known informally as the Harvard CMT Catalog, but its' host institution changed, so the name was changed to be generic.) CMT solutions are derived from long period seismic waves, so give a time-averaged hypocentral location and focal mechanism over the rupture duration of the earthquake. Thus the CMT hypocenter and focal mechanism in general differs from other determinations that use first motion information from short period instruments (e.g. the International Seismological Centre (ISC) catalog).

A search may be made in a couple of different ways, and these choices are indicated in the form.
